Teach the Next Generation of Physicians

Clinical faculty are essential to the mission of the Thomas F. Frist, Jr. College of Medicine (FCoM) to bring the realities of patient care into medical education. Clinical faculty members teach, mentor, support, nurture, and provide important feedback to students during their training for clinical reasoning, professionalism, and compassionate whole-person care. Clinical faculty provide a safe, respectful, and supportive learning environment where our students will flourish as future physicians.

Needs of the Medical Education Program Include:

Foundation Phase (Years 1 & 2)

• Clinical faculty are needed in the Introduction to Clinical Practice (ICP) course to host students in their clinical practices one half-day per week, which starts in their first year of medical school, with the primary purpose of honing history and physical exam skills.
• Clinical faculty are needed as facilitators for simulation labs and small group sessions on campus to supervise basic clinical skills to medical students.
• Clinical Faculty are needed as speakers, mentors, research supervisors, career advisors, and other related development opportunities for medical students.

Clerkship Phase (Years 3 & 4)

• Clinical faculty are needed to supervise, teach, and assess students during their clinical clerkship phase.
• Clinical faculty are needed as clerkship preceptors, particularly for the core disciplines of family medicine, internal medicine, neurology, obstetrics & gynecology, pediatrics, psychiatry, and surgery.
• Clinical faculty are needed in all specialties and subspecialties for electives and fourth year individualization phase requirements.

How to Become a Clinical Faculty Member

Clinical faculty appointments are made by the Dean upon the recommendation of the Department Chair. Faculty ranks recommendations are made to the Dean by the Appointments and Promotion Committee (APC). 

If you are interested in becoming a clinical faculty member, please complete the Clinical Faculty Recruitment Form to start the process.

You will be contacted soon afterwards by a person in the Foundational and Clinical Sciences department with further instructions, including a link to the formal application.

The documents you will need to complete your future application include: 

• Updated Curriculum Vitae
• Proof of active board certification, or if not board certified, official transcripts of your terminal degree from the degree-granting institution.

Academic Ranks

Clinical faculty are appointed at one of four academic ranks based on experience, teaching, and professional accomplishment.

• Clinical Instructor

• Clinical Associate Professor
• Clinical Professor
