September 25, 2024 | by Allison Fomby

A journey of discovery and dedication

Over the next four years, we will follow members of the inaugural class of The Thomas F. Frist, Jr. College of Medicine. These students, each with their unique backgrounds, aspirations and perspectives, are not just pursuing their dreams of becoming physicians — they're helping to shape the future of medical education at Belmont University.

From their first days of classes to their experiences in clinical rotations, we'll follow their triumphs, challenges and growth as they blaze the trail for future generations of Belmont-educated doctors. Their stories offer a window into the exciting world of medical education and the innovative approach of Belmont's newest college.

As the inaugural class of Belmont University's Thomas F. Frist, Jr. College of Medicine settles into its first semester, Caitlyn Luce’s path to medical school stands out as particularly unique. The Jacksonville, Florida native brings a vibrant blend of experiences to her studies at Belmont, including a year as an NFL cheerleader for the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Luce's journey to medicine was far from traditional. "Growing up, I never had any desire to go into medicine," she said. "The older I got, I realized how I felt called to care for others, whether that be in a volunteer setting or simply working at a children's camp over the summer." This realization, however, took time to fully manifest.

From Marketing to Medicine: A Pivotal Shift

However, a pivotal moment occurred midway through her sophomore year. After a shadowing experience in a cardiology clinic, Luce began to reevaluate her career path. "I kind of took a step back and I realized I really don't enjoy this whole marketing, sales pitch thing." Simultaneously, she found inspiration in an unexpected place – her then boyfriend's mother, an OB-GYN, who demonstrated the possibility of balancing a fulfilling medical career with family life.

A Transformative Gap Year

Before embarking on her medical school journey, Luce took a gap year that proved transformative. She became a cheerleader for the Jacksonville Jaguars, an experience that enhanced her skills in community engagement and time management. "My favorite aspects were never the games," she said. "We had the opportunity to travel to London for the London Games, visiting schools and participating in 'Jaguars Prep,' a PE program for local classes."

During this year, she also gained valuable clinical experience as a medical assistant in a pediatric clinic and conducted heart transplant research at Mayo Clinic. "That year was pivotal for me," she said. "It was instrumental in realizing that I'm drawn to pediatrics."

Life as a Belmont Medical Student: Balance and Growth

Now part of Belmont's inaugural medical school class, Luce brings a unique perspective to her studies. Her extracurricular interests reflect a commitment to balance and personal growth. She often joins her classmates for pickleball matches and enjoys exploring the different neighborhoods of Nashville and all the various restaurants and coffee shops the areas have to offer with her golden retriever, Nala, finding solace in nature during intense study periods.

Wellness and Spirituality in Medical Education

What sets Belmont apart for Luce is the institution's emphasis on wellness and spirituality. "They really emphasize your own well-being and want you to be happy," she noted. "The faculty ensures we maintain focus on why we're here and why this is important to us, encouraging us not to get lost in the stress of the process."

This holistic approach has been particularly beneficial in navigating the challenges of medical school so far. Reflecting on her first experience in the anatomy lab, Luce shared, "The anatomy lab was initially daunting, as I had never seen a cadaver before. Before our first session, we had a 15-minute reflection and prayer time, which was incredibly calming. I couldn't have imagined that experience without that initial preparation."

Looking to the Future

"I hope to continue leading with service and provide support for my patients beyond just their medical needs," she articulated, "because ultimately, patients are more than their health issues."

Balancing Medical School and Personal Life

As she progresses through medical school, Luce aims to make a lasting impact both in and out of the medical field. "I hope to say that I found enjoyment throughout this intense process," she said. "Medical school is undoubtedly challenging and time-consuming. My goal is to prioritize a school-life balance that allows for travel, experiencing Nashville and cultivating new interests alongside my future husband."

A Unique Journey in Medicine

From the sidelines of an NFL stadium to the corridors of the Thomas F. Frist, Jr. College of Medicine, Luce’s journey exemplifies the diverse backgrounds and experiences that enrich medical education. Her trajectory from professional cheerleader to future physician underscores the importance of following one's passion, even when it leads down unexpected paths. With her dedication to service, ability to balance rigorous studies with personal growth and enthusiasm for patient care, Luce embodies the spirit of the college’s inaugural class – poised to shape the future of medicine with compassion, creativity and an unwavering commitment to holistic patient care.
