Student Opportunities
The Inman College of Nursing supports many organizations and activities for students to get involved with—both on and off campus—to support their time at Belmont and beyond.
Active participation in community life can greatly enhance the quality of a student’s educational experience—we encourage all students to participate.
In addition to the many university-sponsored mission and study abroad trips, nursing students participate in health-related projects in our neighborhood, city, state and around the world. Our students regularly participate in service-learning at Room in the Inn, Red Cross Blood Drives, Health Fairs, Remote Area Medical (RAM) Clinics, Campus Flu Vaccine Clinics, and Sports Clinics. During the COVID-19 pandemic, students completed service learning at call centers, screening centers, and contact tracing sites, and in recent years, nursing students have participated on trips to Africa, Cambodia, China, Guatemala, Haiti and Northern Ireland.
Sigma Theta Tau International (STTI), the Honor Society of Nursing, is dedicated to improving the health of people worldwide by increasing the scientific base of nursing practice. Members are nursing scholars and students committed to the pursuit of excellence in clinical practice, education, research and leadership.
In 1922, six students from the Indiana University Training School for Nurses in Indianapolis founded the organization, choosing the society's name from three Greek words meaning love, courage and honor. As women ahead of their time, the founders’ vision for the society helped bring recognition to nursing as a science.
Belmont’s College of Nursing has always had a commitment to excellence in nursing scholarship and practice. Belmont's chapter of STTI, Omicron Phi, was chartered May 2, 1998. We currently have approximately 125 members. Undergraduate students who rank in the top 35% of their class after completing half of the nursing curriculum are invited to join STTI. Graduate students who have completed one quarter of their curriculum and have demonstrated excellence in nursing are invited to join STTI. Members of the community can also be invited as Nurse Leaders.
Omicron Phi holds several events to promote the recognition of excellence and the dissemination of scholarship.
The Student Nurses Association (SNA) is a student organization for all nursing students that is affiliated with the National Student Nurses Association. SNA provides the first opportunity for students to get involved with a professional nursing organization which is vital for nurses.
SNA sponsors events that promote healthy living or show the scope of nursing practice and provides opportunities for nursing students to participate in community service events, business meetings, and social events. Members also get the benefits of a Barnes and Noble book discount and a mentorship program.

Scholarship Opportunities
The Gordon E. Inman College of Nursing is committed to supporting students throughout their nursing education. Through the generosity of donors, alumni, and community partners, the College offers a number of scholarship funds exclusively to enrolled pre-licensure and graduate nursing students.
How to Apply
Currently enrolled students: Each fall, the College of Nursing opens a scholarship application window. When the window opens, the application link is sent directly to your Belmont email address and posted to your Canvas page.
A current FAFSA must be on file with Student Financial Services to be considered for any need-based award.
The application will ask for information such as GPA, class standing, and campus involvement. This information is used to match students to the funds for which they qualify. You do not need to select a specific scholarship to apply. The review committee does that work for you.
Incoming students: Prospective and incoming students interested in these scholarships should speak with their admissions representative.

Current scholarship recipients do not need to reapply to maintain their existing award. Students who wish to be considered for additional scholarships are encouraged to submit a new application each year.

Available Scholarship Funds
The following funds are available to eligible students in the Gordon E. Inman College of Nursing. The College of Nursing identifies recipients, and Student Financial Services certifies and disburses all awards. Each fund has its own history and eligibility criteria, reflecting the priorities of the donors who established them.
Established 1980 by Belmont friends Max and Flossie Anderson in honor of their son, the late Glen Anderson, this scholarship seeks to assist worthy students in the College of Nursing. The following criteria serves as guidelines for the College in selecting the recipients of this scholarship: a recommendation from his/her former teacher, and/or religious or educational adviser, high school grades must be a minimum of C+ and all entrance requirements of the Department of Nursing met, possessing good moral character, and a professing Christian, and active in his/her church. For the recipients to have the privilege of renewing the scholarship until graduation, he/she must maintain at least a B average and be in good standing with the University.
Established in 2016 by Belmont Board of Trust Emeriti member and 1955 alumnus Jack Benz and wife Noroma Benz, the Jack and Noroma Benz Endowed Scholarship is based within the Belmont University Gordon E. Inman College of Health Sciences and Nursing for the benefit of the School of Nursing and supports a student who has financial need and plans to pursue a career in the nursing profession.
Established by Belmont friend, the late John Eddie Cain, the John E. Cain III Endowed Scholarship supports a student who is enrolled in the College of Health Sciences and Nursing, School of Education, College of Business Administration, or College of Sciences and Mathematics. To be eligible a student must demonstrate financial need.
Established by the late Belmont 1980 alumna Lois Hudson Cobb and husband Cully Alton Cobb, Jr., the Lois H. Cobb Nursing Endowed Scholarship was established to support older students with demonstrated financial need.
Founded in 2003 and made possible by Gaye Jeans Thomas, in honor of her late father, Lt. Col Harley Earl Jeans, USAF (Ret.), the Lt. Col. Harley Earl Jeans, USAF (Ret.) Endowed Scholarship is awarded annually to male or female health sciences students in good standing with the University. Recipients should schedule and attend an informational session with a recruiting officer of any of the U.S. Armed Forces for sincere consideration of military service, be active duty, honorably discharged or the dependent of active duty military.
Established by the late Ernest H. and Bernice Johnson, this scholarship is designated for nursing students.
Established in 2015, by Belmont friends Richard and Margaret Raney and Elizabeth Little, in honor of their parents, Albert and Louise Little, this scholarship is based within the School of Nursing, with first preference given to a nursing major who is a Veteran or active duty member of the United States Armed Services, or a spouse of a Veteran or active duty military personnel. If no one meets these criteria, second preference shall be given to a nursing major who is a child of an active duty or fallen member of the United States Armed Services. If no applicants with a connection to the United States Armed Services apply or are qualified, then a student with a nursing major and grade point average of 2.5 or higher may be considered by the selection committee. To be considered for this scholarship year after year, a nursing student must maintain a 2.5 or higher grade- point average.
Established in 2014 by Belmont past parents Frank Wright Massey and Nancy Massey, in honor of their daughter Belmont 2018 alumna Elizabeth Massey, this scholarship supports a need-based freshman nursing student who has demonstrated academic merit.
Established in 2015 by the late Board of Trust member Clayton McWhorter and wife Michelle McWhorter, this scholarship supports the McWhorter Society Scholars program and benefit students in the College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences and the Gordon E. Inman College of Nursing.
Established by Belmont friend HCA Healthcare, Inc., the Partners in Nursing Endowed Scholarship is for nursing students.
Established by HCA Healthcare, Inc., the HCA McWhorter Society Endowed Scholarship supports the McWhorter Society Scholars program. McWhorter Society Scholarships support high-achieving students (undergraduate and graduate) with demonstrated financial need who are pursuing health and health science-focused programs in three Colleges of Health Science, Pharmacy and Business. This scholarship is awarded to incoming students and will support these students each year through graduation so long as all relevant eligibility criteria are met
Established in 2004 by the Jeanette Travis Foundation, gifted by Jeanette Travis who was a devoted nurse, the Jeanette Travis Foundation Endowed Nursing Scholarships benefits students majoring in nursing
Established in 2015 by past parents Steven and Patricia Yatauro, this need-based scholarship supports a nursing major.
Established by the late Dr. David R. Dean, the late Belmont 1963 alumna Carolyn Songer Dean and 2023 graduate alumna Dr. Sarah K. Dean, this scholarship provides financial aid to students studying in helping areas, such as ministry, teaching, psychology, or nursing. Recipients will meet all academic requirements for entry into Belmont or be a current student in good standing.
Established in 2021 by retired Belmont professor Martha Buckner and husband Bob Buckner, the Martha and Bob Buckner Endowed Scholarship for Nursing is based within the Gordon E. Inman College of Nursing for the use of the nursing program and supports incoming students with financial need.
Established in 2018 by Belmont friend Jim Crossman, in honor of Mary Bell Crossman, this scholarship is based within the College of Nursing and supports a student with financial need in the Nursing Program.
Established by Belmont professor, 2000 alumna and past parents Martha Ezell and husband Mark Ezell, the Mark and Martha Ezell Endowed Scholarship is based within the Gordon E. Inman College of Nursing and supports a student majoring in nursing with demonstrated financial need.
Established in 2015 by retired Belmont faculty member Dr. Leslie Higgins and husband Chuck Higgins, the Higgins Family Graduate Nursing Endowed Scholarship is based within the Belmont University College of Nursing and is a need-based or merit-based scholarship. First preference is given to a student(s) who are enrolled in a graduate nursing program.
Established in 2013 by the Joe C. Davis Foundation, this scholarship is awarded annually to students who are majoring in nursing.
Established in 2014 by Belmont friend, the late Lorene Jones Nelson, the Lorene Jones Nelson Endowed Scholarship is used to aid a nursing student(s) at the undergraduate, graduate or doctoral level with a cumulative GPA or 3.0 or better.
Established in 2020 by Belmont past parents Dr. Robert and Diana Page, the Page Family Endowed Scholarship is based within the Gordon E. Inman College of Nursing and supports a nursing major with financial need. Preference is expressed for students from the state of Tennessee.
Established in 2020 by 1997 alumnus Wanda Hooper, this scholarship supports a nursing major with demonstrated financial need. This scholarship shall be awarded to incoming students and will support these students each year through graduation so long as all relevant eligibility criteria are met.
Established by Belmont friend, the late Sue Senter, in honor of her aunt, the late Rebekah Senter, the Rebekah Senter Endowed Nursing Scholarship supports undergraduate or graduate students majoring in nursing.
Established by Board of Trust Emeriti member Drew Maddux and his late wife Judy Maddux, the Maddux Family Endowed Scholarship Fund supports students who are enrolled and selected in the following priority: the Gordon Inman College of Nursing, Thomas F. Frist Jr. College of Medicine, School of Physical Therapy or Occupational Therapy, College of Pharmacy, College of Eduation and Jack C. Massey College of Business. First preference is for the college education of young men and young women who have a history of being in foster care. Second preference is for students from single parent households.
Established by 1970 alumna and past parent Ann Yeager Loffi in memory of her husband, 1971 alumnus and past parent, Mike Loffi, this scholarship supports a student-athlete showing considerable dedication to their athletic aspirations and pursuing a career in the health sciences. First preference shall be for a student-athlete pursuing a major within the Gordon E. Inman College of Nursing. If a student-athlete meeting the aforementioned academic criterion cannot be identified, then a student-athlete pursuing a major in another Belmont college may be chosen. This scholarship shall be awarded to incoming students and will support these students each year through graduation so long as all relevant eligibility criteria are met.
Founded in 1984 to celebrate Pat and Clarence Steinhouse's 40th wedding anniversary, this scholarship was established through the generosity of the Steinhouse family to honor their enduring commitment to one another and to the Belmont community. The Pat R. Steinhouse Nursing Scholarship Fund supports students enrolled in the College of Nursing, ensuring that future generations have the opportunity to pursue a career in nursing regardless of financial circumstance. The fund reflects the Steinhouse family's deep generosity and their lasting belief in the value of a compassionate, well-trained nursing workforce.
Established in 2021, by Belmont 1974 alumnus, the late Glynn Stephen Proctor, the Glynn Proctor 74 Endowed Scholarship supports a nursing major with demonstrated financial need, in good academic standing with the University. This scholarship is awarded to incoming students and will support these students each year through graduation so long as all relevant eligibility criteria are met.
The Joanne and William Conway Nursing Scholarship, funded by the Bedford Falls Foundation, supports traditional BSN students with financial need.
