What is Data For Diversity?

We believe that decisions and actions are best when there is a diversity of thought. Diversity of thought happens by engaging with individuals from diverse backgrounds, cultures, and communities.

Students of different age groups and race discuss and talk in front of computers.

How Do We Create Diversity of Thought?

  • Promoting diverse groups through events (ex. data hackathons) and through support of local and national efforts that promote diversity of thought (ex. Women in Technology of TN, Blacks in Tech - Nashville).
  • Projects that help and support vulnerable populations based on their challenges (ex. human trafficking) or their location (North Nashville).

What is a Data Hackthon?

A Data Hackathon is an event that allows students and mentors the opportunity to use data to provide insights and actionable solutions to problems within a community, non-profit, or company.

When did they start?

The first Data Hackathon at Belmont University was on November 5th, 2021 and was a joint effort between the College of Business, the Curb College of Media and Entertainment, and the Mechanical Licensing Collective. With over 100 students, song catalogs were analyzed to identify inconsistencies and outliers for all songs that have royalties. Since that initial hackathon, several others have been conducted.

  • Mechanical Licensing Collective – Nov. 2021
