Enroll or Waive
Health insurance helps protect you from unexpected medical expenses and provides access to care when you need it, helping you stay healthy and focused on your academic goals.

Have Insurance?

Students requesting a waiver for SHIP are responsible for ensuring their current health insurance plan meets the following mandatory requirements:

  • Provide access to healthcare services where you will live while enrolled.
  • Includes reasonable access to in-network doctors, specialists, urgent care, emergency care, and hospital services.
  • Cover mental health and behavioral health services.
  • Include prescription drug coverage.
  • Remain active throughout the academic term for which the waiver is requested.
  • A Provider network and benefits that support your healthcare needs while enrolled.
Having health insurance does not always mean having access to care where you'll live and study. Before submitting a waiver, take time to review your benefits, provider network, and potential healthcare costs to ensure your plan meets your needs while attending Belmont.

Need Health Coverage While Attending Belmont?

The Belmont Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) through UnitedHealthcare is designed to support students where they live, learn, and receive care. Students who do not have health insurance, or whose current plan may not provide adequate coverage while attending Belmont, may choose to enroll in SHIP.

SHIP includes access to:

  • Preventive and routine healthcare services
  • Doctor and specialist visits
  • Urgent care and emergency services
  • Hospitalization and surgical care
  • Mental health and behavioral health services
  • Prescription drug coverage
  • A nationwide provider network for care near campus and beyond.

Students who do not provide proof of other qualifying health insurance by the applicable deadline (December 6, 2026) will be automatically enrolled in SHIP, after the premium is charged to their student account.

Frequently Asked Questions About SHIP

Questions About Deadlines, Waivers & Premiums

The  deadline to opt in or waive coverage for Spring 2027 is Dec. 6. This ensures that students who plan to opt-in for coverage are able to have their insurance premium charge added to their student account in time for billing. Students who complete the waiver after this date but before January 13, 2027will need to submit their waiver information and, once approved, wait 7-10 business days to see the update on their student account.

Students that do not take any action will be automatically enrolled into Belmont SHIP and will be responsible for the insurance premium charge.

You have the opportunity to waive the student insurance plan through the Belmont SHIP portal (Belmont's UHCSR website). You will need to upload your insurance ID card and answer a few questions.

You will need to upload supporting documentation that can verify your CURRENT health care coverage. You will be able to upload up to 3 documents.  Acceptable documentation includes:

  • A medical insurance coverage confirmation letter
  • An insurance eligibility or benefits document from your insurance carrier
  • Employer-sponsored health insurance enrollment confirmation
  • Marketplace (Healthcare.gov or state exchange) enrollment documentation
  • Military health coverage documentation (e.g., TRICARE)
  • Other official documentation showing the student's name, insurance company, and active coverage dates

Your information may not be added to the UHC portal. Please contact studentinsurance@belmont.edu explaining the error, and someone will add your information to the portal.

Students who submitted an online waiver form and received a denial will have the opportunity to submit additional documentation in support of their waiver request.  If a student has met all applicable deadlines and received a waiver denial, they may appeal the decision to Belmont’s Student Health Insurance Plan Appeals Committee. Appeals must be submitted using the SHIP Waiver Appeals form. Download, print out and complete this form, clearly outlining the rationale for the appeal and including all supporting documentation relevant to the request. The form must be completed and returned to Belmont Central within 10 days of the waiver denial. A Belmont Central representative will be in touch with the student regarding the Committee’s decision. Students with questions about the appeals process should email studentinsurance@belmont.edu.

SHIP Premiums

  • Annual Coverage (Fall + Spring): $3,590
  • Fall 2026: $1,795
  • Spring 2027 Only: $2,076

SHIP premiums are billed directly to the student's account.

Waiving SHIP Coverage

Students with qualifying health insurance coverage may request a waiver of the Belmont Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP).

Important Deadlines

  • December 6, 2026 is the waiver deadline for Spring 2027.

  • Waivers submitted and approved by this date will prevent the SHIP premium from being charged to the student's account.

If You Miss the December 6 Deadline

Students who do not have an approved waiver by December 6, 2026:

  • Will have the SHIP premium charged to their student account.

  • Will be automatically enrolled in SHIP on January 13, 2027.

Final Waiver Deadline

Students may submit a waiver request until January 13, 2027. They must provide proof of qualifying health insurance coverage. If a waiver is approved after December 6, but before January 13, any SHIP enrollment and applicable charges will be reviewed and adjusted according to University procedures.

After January 13, 2027

Students who do not obtain an approved waiver by this final deadline will remain enrolled in SHIP and are responsible for the associated premium.

  • Requests received after the final waiver deadline may only be considered through the appeal process and must be submitted by January 23, 2027. Supporting documentation is required and all appeals are subject to review and approval.

Students who register for full-time classes after the Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) deadline—defined as 6 or more credit hours for graduate students and 12 or more credit hours for undergraduate students—will still have the responsibility to either enroll in or waive the SHIP.

These students will have until December 6, 2026 to complete the enrollment or waiver process. If no action is taken by this date, the student will be automatically enrolled in the Belmont SHIP, and the corresponding insurance premium will be charged to their student account. Students will have until January 13, 2027 to waive the insurance and for the charge to be removed. If students enroll after the first day of class, please reach out to studentinsurance@belmont.edu.

For questions or assistance, please contact the Student Insurance Office at 866-233-4512 or via email at studentinsurance@belmont.edu.

YES, coverage goes until 7/31/2027 for the 2026-2027 Academic year.

YES. This has coverage internationally, BUT internationally it will only cover urgent/acute situations. The insurance will not cover preventive care, but if you get the flu, break a bone, have an accident, etc. everything is covered at the in-network levels.

If you are graduating in December, you have the option to keep the Belmont SHIP for the full coverage period. However, the full annual premium must be paid prior to graduation to maintain benefits. This ensures there is no outstanding balance and that coverage remains active while students seek employment. For those who wish to discontinue coverage, cancellation requests should be sent to studentinsurance@belmont.edu. This should be done by November 1, 2026 - December 6, 2026.

Open Enrollment for new incoming student students for the Spring semester will open each Nov. 1.

Students may enroll in dependent coverage by visiting the UHC Portal. Eligible dependents include a student’s married spouse or child (under the age of 26). It is the student’s responsibility to enroll eligible dependents each year. Dependents are not automatically re-enrolled. The premium rate will be different, and additional information can be found through the UHC portal or by contacting the Support Team at 866-233-4512.

Sign in or register for an account through the UHC portal for 24/7 access to see your benefits, find network doctors, view and pay claims and more.

Questions About Payment Options

The Belmont Student Health Insurance premium will be charged to your student account. We offer multiple payment options such as personal check, online ACH payment, credit card or utilizing financial aid.

Yes. Since the insurance premium will be charged to your student account, you can use our payment plan options each semester.

Federal, state, institutional and outside financial aid is applied to all direct university charges first (tuition, fees, housing and meals). Additional aid (loans) can be borrowed to cover the health insurance premium. However, we are required to obtain written Title IV authorization to use those loan disbursements to pay for the premium. The Office of Student Financial Services would need to confirm loan eligibility before the student can apply for loans.
