Biography

Dr. Laurie Gavilo-Lane is an Assistant Professor of Epidemiology appointed to the Department of Public Health at Belmont University in August of 2022. Dr. Gavilo-Lane is a dedicated public health scholar, utilizing data-driven, evidence-based interventions to improve the quality of life for those experiencing addiction, poverty, homelessness, and health disparities. Her areas of expertise encompass program planning and evaluation, epidemiology, addiction medicine, mental and behavioral health, and grant writing. 
Before her tenure at Belmont University, Dr. Gavilo-Lane co-owned and operated a Tennessee-licensed Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) clinic for individuals diagnosed with opioid dependency. Her professional trajectory includes roles such as Administrator for Mayo Clinic's International Health Scholarship Program and Director of Mayo School of Graduate Medical Education's Clinical/Research Diversity Programs. She was also a program evaluator and epidemiologist for the Louisiana Office of Public Health HIV/AIDS Program. Finally, during her doctoral studies at Tulane University, she was the Director of Tulane Drop-In Center, developing and evaluating programs targeting transient homeless youth. 
Dr. Gavilo-Lane possesses extensive teaching experience at both the graduate and undergraduate levels, covering courses in statistics, epidemiology, health economics, and health policy. She integrates teaching, service, leadership, and research opportunities for students in her courses. Course content focuses on empowering students to transform their world with intelligence, evidence, courage, and faith. 
Outside of her academic and professional appointments, Dr. Gavilo-Lane regularly volunteers with organizations such as Alive Hospice, Urban Housing Solutions, Second Harvest Food Bank, and Cumberland River Compact. She also holds leadership positions as Co-Chair of the Tennessee Public Health Association (TPHA) Epidemiology Committee and as a member of the Board of Directors for the National Healthcare for the Homeless Council.
