Biography

Douglas Crews, PhD, LMSW, MDiv, is an Associate Professor of Social Work at Belmont University and the recipient of the Chaney Distinguished Professor Teaching Award (2022). Before joining Belmont, he served in ministry with the United Methodist Church and worked as a Therapeutic Social Worker. Dr. Crews is a Licensed Master Social Worker and a certified Spiritual Director with experience working with diverse populations, including the developmentally disabled, older adults, LGBTQ+ individuals, and college students.

At Belmont, Dr. Crews teaches a wide range of courses in the BSW program, including Exploring Human Diversity, Crisis Intervention, Mindfulness, Mental Health, and Group Therapy. His research interests include self-compassion, mindfulness, diversity, social/economic/environmental justice, the intersection of spirituality and religion in social work (particularly regarding religious trauma), LGBTQ+ issues, sexuality and gender, and social work education and professionalism.

Dr. Crews is dedicated to student support at Belmont, collaborating with counseling services, serving as the faculty co-sponsor for the Bridge Builders LGBTQ+ Student Group and sponsor for the Muslim Student Association (MSA), and he is passionate about teaching and leading study abroad trips. When not in the classroom, he enjoys traveling, road trips, exploring National and State Parks, discovering Nashville's culinary scene, enjoying his many plants, and spending quality time with his friends, and family.
